A Sublime Evening in Divine Company

It is always a pleasure to capture shows at The Brighton Dome. A beautiful venue with incredibly helpful, friendly staff. And the lighting is a photographer’s dream. Usually there is the luxury of a pit to shoot from as well, but as this was a seated only show it did mean my areas for shooting from were a little limited.
I have always enjoyed Neil Hannon’s music, but for some reason have never seen The Divine Comedy live. So when Nick Linazasoro asked if I’d like to cover the photography for Brighton and Hove News I jumped at the chance.
This was a very popular event – the room was full and buzzing. I also had the feeling that this was a theatre full of old friends. Neil has a lot of very loyal fans and with the release of the new album Rainy Sunday Afternoon receiving high praise, the tour is drawing old and new admirers.

The current touring band line up is Neil Hannon himself on vocals and guitar, Andrew Skeet on keyboard, Ian Watson on accordion and keyboard, Tosh Flood on guitar and banjo, Simon Little on Bass, Tim Wheller on drums and Rosie Tompsett on violin. Together creating a truly magical sound and presence. The audience were spellbound and full of appreciation throughout. And Neil is an artist that it is hard not to fall in love with. Not just for his music but for his humour and committed charismatic performance. He communicates with his audience throughout the evening, nurturing an environment filled with warmth and familiarity.

Preceding this memorable musical experience was a gorgeous set from the equally amiable Studio Electrophonique

With the name taken from the legendary studio built by Ken Patten in council house in Sheffield this solo project of singer songwriter James Leesley finds it’s influences in exposure to heartfelt melodies of songsmiths like Carole King and Burt Bacharach and vocalists such as Dusty Springfield and Elvis. Intertwine this with his meeting with Simon Tong and a shared love of The Velvet Underground, The Byrds and Jake Thackray you arrive at the creation of beautifully warm, intimate, heartfelt music. What a way to begin the evening’s journey!

This was a night of music and vibes that not only inspired but also left me with a warm, fuzzy glow that lasted all week. For a more in-depth review by Mark Kelly head over to Brighton and Hove News. As always please do click on the links to explore the artists’ back catalogue.
